The Accidental Gardener

Last Summer, Rylan was on a kick about planting seeds, and since we can barely resist his little face, we of course obliged, knowing it was way too late to really have much success with planting. We planted tomato and watermelon seeds in mid-June and were lucky enough to get several yummy tomatoes before the first freeze. The watermelons got accidentally run over by the lawnmower, but the grocery store provided some yummy ones so we got over it.  Then, this year after lots of snow of ice last winter and even into March, we started to see these big leaved plants with yellow flowers sprout up in our front flower-bed!

We did a little "google" research and thought they were watermelon plants, and we made sure they stayed watered. I have whatever the opposite of a green thumb is, so we were just all excited that something was growing!!!

We were so excited when the buds started to change to fruit! And for a while we still thought we were growing melons, but I believe this is a pumpkin!  This makes sense, because this is the garden right in front of the front porch where we gutted and carved our pumpkins, and we did push some of the seeds off the porch to clean up!  I wonder how many we'll grow in our crop...

While I was outside and miraculously not sweating (8:30 pm), I thought I'd take a few more shots. This little do-dad given to me by my grandma seems appropriate for this post.

I love this bird-cage I found once-upon-a-time at a thrift store. It was an ugly honey color. I quickly spray-painted it black, and it looked better, but now it's all chippy-like, and I love it!

And, you can't go for without seeing one of these in my yard/porch!

Happy Summer y'all! We are on the down-swing,only three weeks until inservice week, but there is still lots of fun to be had. The kids and I are headed up to Michigan this week!
